Conversion of food and drink data to footprint

Get footprint in kilograms of CO2-equivalents for a given amount of calories or weight consumed, per category of food and drink

All inputs, outputs and defaults can be seen in the Convert food and drink technical API docs.

Inputs

This endpoint receives:

  • a data source to base calculations on

  • a list of food and drink categories, optionally associated to a value and its unit

  • optionally the date for which the footprint should be computed

At least one category of food and drink must be provided. Values of either energy (kcal) or weight (kg) consumed are optional input. If you have not submitted optional data, you get the conversion factor for the given category in return. If no date is given, the current date is taken as the default.

Outputs

This endpoint returns, for each category:

  • footprint in kilos of CO2e, rounded to grams
  • weight in kilograms

Calculations

The amount of calories (kcal) for a type of food are multiplied with its corresponding multiplier (kg CO2e/kcal) to obtain the footprint due to its consumption. If you instead enter the quantity (in kg) of a particular food, we first find the equivalent calories by multiplying with the caloric density (kcal/kg). Once the calories are obtained, we multiply with the corresponding multiplier to obtain the footprint in kg CO2e.

Sources

Multipliers

The multipliers are obtained from the RISE food climate database, which provides information about the climate impact of different food products over the food supply chain including production, processing and transportation to the country border.

The climate database contains hundreds of different data sources, with climate footprint calculations made by various independent researchers. As a consequence, the methodology differs between the data sources, but it’s always based on a life cycle assessment (with the important steps from methods ISO 14040-44 or 14067). Individual studies and researchers are not necessarily ISO certified.

Experts in RISE have evaluated the data quality aspects of each study. Today this evaluation is done from RISE’s long experience in the LCAs for the food and drink sector. We hope in the future to be more transparent concerning the evaluation process.

Caloric density

The caloric densities of various food items (kcal/kg) are taken from Matportalen, the food composition table provides information concerning the content of nutrients and energy of the most commonly consumed foods in Norway. The nutritional values used for each of the food items are in the form in which they are usually found in stores (mostly unprepared).

The input date also affects the calculations. We take into account the technological changes over time (sustainable farming methods, fossil-free fertiliser production) and their impact on your footprint.

See also intro to convert endpoint overview of related endpoints.

Note that the related convert finance endpoint can convert a food and drink expense into footprint.
